Sanduni Perera

Sanduni completed her Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) at Monash University in 2021 and is now a Graduate Mechanical Engineer with BMD in Victoria. No two days are ever the same in her role, and the following profile provides a general snapshot of what her day may involve.

6.00 AM

I wake up, get dressed for work, and have a quick morning snuggle with my puppy.

6.30 AM

Leave home and drive 30 minutes to work.

7.00 AM

Arrive at our solar shed through the beauty of the Dinsan Nursery trees. 
Start my computer.

Have a quick breakfast while discussing the day’s activities with the rest of the project team.

Head off to the prestart location in Braeside Park, which is a 15 minute drive from the project site compound. The project I am currently working on is a 21-kilometer pipeline, which means the prestart location changes to suit the area in which BMD is currently working. 

If we’re lucky, we get to enjoy the view of hot air balloons landing in the nursery’s empty land area.

Attend prestart with the work crew for the day and delegate tasks for each team. 

8.30 AM –10.00 AM

Marking out areas where service proving is required for non-destructive digging operators to prove.

Pick up proven services using the GPS rover and manually mark them on the Service Control Plans (SCP).

10.00 AM

Head back to the site compound for the morning tea break and have a snack. Update the team on the found services and any unexpected finds or other activity that occurred on site.

10.30 AM

Drive to a work site in Brighton for renewal works. Renewals involve replacing the existing water assets (pipelines servicing South East Water customers that have come to the end of their life) with new pipeline. 

11.00 AM

Communicate with the field team to get an update on the current work progress. 

Walk along the construction area to check housekeeping and temporary water connection

12.00 PM

Attend swab testing of the newly installed pipeline while an inspector from South East Water attends to verify the cleanliness of the pipe. 

12.30 PM

Head back to the site compound in Din San for lunch. 

1.30 PM

Review the GPS service pick up file and ensure all the services are properly picked up and labelled correctly. Update the daily cost tracker for any site activities. 

2.00 PM

Drive to another work site in Elwood for renewals along the beautiful coastline. 

2.30 PM

Attend a community engagement audit with an inspector from South East Water to ensure all the information boards on the project are available for the public to access and there are no complaints raised by the public during work. 

3.30 PM

Head back to the site compound.

Work on an upcoming tender for renewals. 

5.00 PM

Finish work and drive back home.

5.30 PM

My puppy excitedly greets me when I am back home, so have a little play time with him or take him for a walk.

Have my evening tea, prepare dinner, and pack food for tomorrow. 

6.30 PM

Do a home workout or go to the gym, depending on how I am feeling. 

7.30 PM

Have a shower and lay in bed while reading a Manga. 

8.00 PM

I had dinner with my family while watching a K-drama.

9.00 PM

Go to bed and snuggle more with my puppy.

9.30 PM

Lights off; sleep on for a fresh start tomorrow.
