What's your job about?

My daily work all depends on the project I’m on. For instance, my first project at ITW involved updating a brand’s packaging. My typical day within this project would involve talking to suppliers to assess our packaging opportunities and talking to our customers to identify what we are doing well and what needs improvements. On the other hand, a project I recently completed focused on data analysis and gathering insights on market opportunities.

What's your background?

I was born in Sydney and moved to Melbourne at the spritely age of 4, where I was fortunate enough to grow up by the bay in Melbourne. I have lived and studied in Melbourne ever since!

I graduated from my studies in 2020 after completing a Bachelor of Marketing and Management at Monash University. Going to university was a pivotal moment in my life. I started my university experience studying health sciences which I took a lot of value from, a lot of what I learnt I apply to my own life today. However, I couldn’t help but miss studying business, a subject that I enjoyed throughout high school. So, I made the switch about a year into my degree to marketing and management. This decision was one of the best I have ever made, it has opened my eyes to what I am most passionate about – Business. The experiences and learning opportunities within my degrees is what led me to ITW and ultimate their graduate program.

I applied for the graduate program in 2020, my last year of university. The process involved interviews, group activities and exposure to leaders within ITW. Throughout the graduate assessment days, I progressively got more nervous as I realised how great a program ITW had to offer. I was ecstatic to be offered a place within the program a few days after the assessments.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Most definitely – In fact, all the graduates have different backgrounds and a different set of skills and knowledge.

I believe the key to being in the graduate program is having the passion to make the most of every learning opportunity - all contributing to delivering on your projects.

There is a range of opportunities within ITW that require all different types of experience and backgrounds.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

There are many cool aspects involved when working for ITW. I’ll touch on two.

ITW provides its graduates with a great support system. This is extremely beneficial when you have recently finished university and making that transition from university student to career. ITW cares about its people by having the support system through the HR team, project managers and my mentor has allowed me to navigate my projects with ease.

The second cool aspect of working for ITW is the opportunity to lead projects. Even at a graduate-level, you are trusted to take ownership of your projects, all leading to a greater level of learning opportunities and exposure within the company.

What does your job uniquely offer?

The thing I love most about my role as a graduate is the amount of time and effort that ITW puts into investing in your career. From my first project I was given the support that I needed to grow and expand on what I learned at university. I have only been with ITW for a year, and I have already developed and learned a significant amount.

Recently I was reflecting on projects I have completed thus far within the program. Projects, that without ITW, I would never have been able to gain exposure to. I reflected on the experience and objectives achieved within each project which ultimately validated that I am on the right career path.

What are the limitations of your job?

ITW values teamwork, there is a big element of shared risk within every project, and it is ingrained in the company culture. I am someone that very much enjoys collaboration and working with a team, so this concept suits my style of work. If you are a person that prefers to work individually (which is perfectly fine) a corporate organisation may not be for you.

3 pieces of advice for your university-self?

  • Don’t be afraid of change – There is no need to stick to a set life plan. Things change, your views/values change, the world changes and you begin to want different things. Allow yourself the time and space to explore what you want for your career.
  • Embrace every opportunity – There are so many clubs, networking events and workshops available at universities. Additionally, get involved with industry associations and their events. Having a network of people within the industry that you want to work in is extremely beneficial.
  • Know your worth and don’t doubt yourself. Especially important in your last year of university when applying for jobs. There’s a reason you are where you are, and any company would be lucky to have you.
