Pros & Cons

  • Caring company who cares more about it's people than profit.
  • Johnstaff works within a niche market, offering the opportunity to work on a wide range of unique projects.
  • The best thing is that Johnstaff would push you to reach your career milestones and push you to do better.
  • Daily challenges of on-site work.
  • Can require long hours to meet deadlines.
  • The job comes with a lot of responsibility and is quite dynamic, meaning there is always a lot to keep on top of. At times, it can be difficult to switch off at the end of the day from the many moving parts of the project.
  • The worst thing probably is that work comes and goes in waves. You might be very busy one week and then fairly free the other.
  • Travel requirements for projects if you are site based.

Culture
There is a great team culture here at Johnstaff. While there is a defined hierarchy on each project and within the broader team, everyone is given an opportunity to contribute their ideas & take on greater responsibility wherever possible. Each project team works closely on a day-to-day basis in a very supportive and team-focused environment with everyone willing to provide their time to assist where required. Outside of work hours, the team often socialises, whether that be at a formal work function or informally over a game of golf or basketball on a weekend.

Satisfaction
I am exposed to all facets of a project rather than being pigeon holed into one specific task. I am in constant communication with the client whilst also being based on site coordinating site activities between all trades.

Management
My managers make great mentors. I receive frequent feedback (formal and informal) from my direct line managers on a regular basis. My managers provide me with a lot of support on a daily basis and have shown a genuine interest in my career progression and growth. I am often asked if I have any concerns to raise within my job and management carefully considers providing me with experiences that will support my development, giving me opportunities to take on greater responsibilities earlier into my career.

Office Work Environment
Johnstaff has a large office in Melbourne (along with other offices in Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch). The office has space for over 60 employees at either permanent desks or bookable hot desks. There is also a number of bookable conference rooms and meeting rooms with high quality video conferencing systems. At lunchtime and the end of the work week, the team gather in the lunch room, known as 'the family room' which has all the facilities you need including a drinks fridge and a of course a great coffee machine. Standard office attire is worn in the office (i.e. business pants and shirt). However;, as I am site based I am generally in a Johnstaff polo shirt and work pants.

Recruitment

Recruitment
The interview process was smooth and a lot less daunting than other interviews I had before my employment at Johnstaff. As it was during COVID I was unfortunately unable to attend my interviews in the office. However, I was involved in two interviews during the process. Questions I was asked ranged from previous experiences, reasons for wanting to be a part of the company, my career ambitions and personal interests and hobbies. Be yourself and don't feel like you need to know everything now and have the experience of someone who has worked many years in the industry. The process is more focused on understanding whether you would be the right fit within the team and the company culture and your attitude to learning and developing with Johnstaff.

Typically, held by project managers or project directors, presentations on a variety of topics (e.g. procurement, programming, contract administration) are offered to all employees. Informally, I have found that management is quite accessible and willing to provide the time provide assistance and training on the job as required.
