Diversity & Inclusion at UQ & ANU

Diversity & Inclusion at UQ & ANU Graduate Programs & Internships

  • Recruitment & HR

With representatives from both the University of Queensland and the Australian National University, we are showcasing inclusive workplace practices and diversity initiatives within the Higher Education sector. UQ values equity, diversity and inclusion, and seeks to reflect the broader community by attracting and retaining high-quality staff from a range of backgrounds. We have developed a number of networks and programs to support our equity, diversity and inclusion priorities and objectives. We are committed to identifying and addressing areas of under-representation among staff and aim to provide a respectful and healthy work environment for staff from all backgrounds, focusing on 6 key areas:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment
  • Gender
  • Sexuality, gender and sex
  • Cultural and linguistic diversity
  • Disability
  • Work and caring responsibilities.

ANU is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion as fundamental values. We are committed to providing opportunities and an inclusive and welcoming environment to people of all backgrounds, and identities. We strive to achieve excellence in everything we do, and to lead the nation in the recruitment, retention, mentoring, management and development of academic and professional staff. We are dedicated to providing a healthy, safe and respectful work environment for our staff, and ensuring equality of opportunity. Our key initiatives include:

  • ANU was awarded a SAGE Athena SWAN Institutional Bronze Award through the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) program. The award recognises the University's efforts to eliminate gender bias and develop an inclusive culture that values all staff.
  • Our Reconciliation Action Plan and Indigenous employment programs support our commitment to Reconciliation and fulfilling our responsibility to Indigenous Australia.
  • Initiatives to support families with ANU a national leader on equal access to parental leave for both birth and non-birth parents. Parental leave provisions include 26 weeks paid leave, career re-entry assistance (equivalent to 6 weeks paid leave), and employer superannuation contributions granted for unpaid parental leave. These are inclusive of a range of relationships and family structures, including biological, opposite and same-sex marriage and de facto relationships, adoption and surrogacy.
  • The ANU Ally Network is a visible network of staff and students across the University who support the University’s commitment to providing an inclusive and respectful university environment for people who identify as being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ+).
  • Disability support and the development of a Disability Action Plan.
  • The Respectful Relationships Unit demonstrates the University's commitment to providing a safe and respectful campus for the entire ANU community.
